Wish You Were Here - Hart House Community Kitchen
February 28th, 2007 by JP Crossing the Great Hall, through a set of doors, down the stairs, and navigating a maze of hallways finally leads us to the Hart House Kitchen. What business do I have in the Hart House Kitchen you ask? Well, no, I don’t actually make those $5 lunches you see me posting about. I’m here for a fun night of cooking at the monthly Hart House Community Kitchen, organized by the Hart House Social Justice Committee.
Whether you enjoy cooking or you just like to eat, Hart House Community Kitchen is a great event for a Tuesday night. Not only do you get cooking instruction and dinner for $5, you even get to take some food home with you!
Every Hart House Community Kitchen sports a theme, and the one I attended was on Native Barbados cuisine. Not sure what that consists of? Well, we made Bajan fried chicken, Bajan rice and Stew, Coo-Coo (a mix of cornmeal and ockra), and a Bajan hot sauce. The chicken was flavourful and tender, the rice and stew complemented each other nicely, and the Coo-Coo… well, I wasn’t a big fan of the Coo-Coo, but all in all, I can tell you that it was very tasty meal.
In addition to the tasty food, I really enjoyed the whole process. I learned how to cut a chicken into quarters and how not to burn myself with hot oil when deep frying (a good skillset to have when making fried chicken). A jolly Greek chef with a great sense of humour oversaw our small group, and I truly felt like there was a sense of community going on. Sitting down at the dinner table and sharing the meal we all prepared together felt nice: reminiscent of home cooked meals and dinner with the family, something not often enjoyed as a student living on campus and far from home. I’ll definitely be showing up to the next Hart House Community Kitchen and I hope to see you there.
Hart House Community Kitchen happens every month. The next one is March 13, 2007 and the theme is Vegan Inspiration. You can sign up at the front desk at Hart House for $5.
