I don't think he's trying to say that we shouldn't use condoms or have sex altogether. I think that he is just trying to make people aware that condoms don't guarantee safe sex, which is a fact that most people don't know.

Wait... what? So... you're saying that we might as well not use condoms because they aren't as safe as they claim? Or that it's ok to try to force a group of people to use abstinence only as a form of STD and pregnancy protection? Are you off your rocker?

Condoms make sex safer. Period. Maybe not 100% safe, but DEFINITELY not worse. The reason the Pope believes that it might make things worse is because if condoms were used more often then he's afraid people might have sex more *gasp* It's wrong to expect people to just not have sex unless they are married. It's a deep down biological urge to have sex and if it's going to happen one way or another, it's better off if we do it as safe as we can while still doing it. Abstinence only education on sex does not work... look at the stats in the US, a country that in many places tries desperately to use that methodology.

It's this type of thinking that keeps countries from moving onward in life. Condoms will at least prevent some infection and will prevent a fair amount of pregnancy which, oh... is another issue in those countries, go figure. Less disease means that the medical supplies that can get shipped there are used more effectively and less people means less mouths to feed which helps food issues.

Pleasantries like the Pope tries to teach are NOT a solution. Condoms are at least a start.
