What you are describing is the 'wedding industry'. And you are correct. It is a total sham. However, there's something to be said for declaring your committment to each other, in public, before family and friends. I can't explain it other than to say that it really is different. I use to think exactly as you, but at some point, it became an important difference to me.

My idea of a perfect wedding: invite friends and family to a party (don't tell them its a wedding so that they don't feel pressured to bring wedding gifts that I don't need/want); hold it on Toronto Island; everyone comes by bicycle, suprise them with the ceremony when everyone gets there; catering by the Rectory Cafe. Minimal amount of planning and fuss. Maximum amont of time spent mingling with family and friends.

Weddings are only as expensive and complicated as you choose to make them. Ignore the wedding industry. Do what is special to you and will make you happy. Including not getting married at all.
