Wu-Tang Forever: 8 Diagrams Release Party

On Thursday December 6th, The Parkdale Drink will be converted into a hip hop head wonderland. 6 years later, Wu-Tang has reappeared on the scene with a new album: 8-Diagrams. Their long anticipated disc features a tribute to everyone’s favorite clansman and Mariah Carey collaborator, Ol’ Dirty. The track, entitled “Life Changes” is a shoutout from the eight remaining members of Wu to ODB who passed on in 2004. Wu-Tang won’t actually be appearing at the event -I know, that’s soft. However, the organizers promise lots of free swag and features DJ’s Kaewonder & JC.

So you don’t feel quite street enough for this party? Here are 8 things (in no particular order) you should know about Wu-Tang Clan before you head out Thursday night:

1. The first single off the new album is a cover of the Beatles classic “While my Guitar Gently Weeps”. It features John Frusciante
of the Chili Peppers, George Harrison’s son and Erykah Badu.
2. It’s Ghostface Killah, not Ghostface Killer -emphasis on the “ah”.
3. 8 Diagrams is Wu’s fifth official release.
4. Method Man is a pretty successful actor, having appeared in such cinematic classics as Garden State, How High and Soul Plane.
5. On ODB’s death, RZA has been quoted as saying: “He was a very special person, like a very rare diamond. You know, it’s like
you wake up one day and they’re saying, ‘There are no diamonds in the world anymore, just cubic zirconia…'”
6. The group is mostly made up of criminals. That is to say, a bunch of them have been in jail for assault.
7. Don’t worry…How High the sequel is in the works.
8. Dave Chappelle loves Wu-Tang…he talks about them all the time.

Hopefully that short education has given you all the encouragement you need to reach the release party on Thursday Dec. 6th. It starts at 10pm! Here’s a map to get you there. More info, see the facebook event page.

Last Friday of the Month Party!

LFOTM, organized by the Medical Biophysics Graduate Student Union, is an interdepartmental event held every Last Friday of the Month during the school year. It’s a night for U of T grad students, postdocs, other trainees, and friends to gather, relax, and share a drink. And if you’re quick, you might just get some free pizza that arrives periodically throughout the evening (and is immediately devoured).

I commend these guys on the attempt of choosing a theme… but I will ruthlessly frown upon anyone who comes dressed in 80’s gear. Anyway, I’ve been to one of these and they’re pretty fun. So do check it out if you’re free.

When: Friday, November 30, 6pm
Where: Princess Margaret Hospital 7th floor (610 University Ave)
Details: Here’s the facebook event page. You can also join the LFOTM facebook group. Be sure to bring ID to the event.

Pecha Kucha Night in Toronto

pecha kucha night

Pecha Kucha Night, devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (Klein Dytham architecture), was conceived in Tokyo in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. Since then, Pecha Kucha has spread to cities all over the world, including Toronto.

So, what is Pecha Kucha Night? Pecha Kucha (ペチャクチャ) is the Japanese onomatopoeia for the sound of conversation (think “chit-chat”). Pecha Kucha Night is a presentation format with a simple set of rules: exactly 20 slides, each shown for 20 seconds. That’s it!

The next Pecha Kucha Night in Toronto is happening this Wednesday Nov 28th. Read on to find out details.

Madrid = energetic, dreamy, alive

Two main criticisms I get when I mention that I’m into electronic music are (1) that electronic music is cold and (2) that electronic music is boring.

Because of its heavy reliance on technology, electronic music is sometimes branded as lacking the human factor and sounding repetitiously predictable.

Madrid proves these stereotypes wrong and is a worthy addition to the indie/electronic scene. Listening to Madrid’s new EP –First Message–, I’m proud to say that I did not feel bored or disconnected at all. And… as a major Boards of Canada and Ulrich Schnauss fan, I like to think that I know what I’m talking about when it comes to this genre.

Listening to the tracks on Madrid’s EP, I lost myself in a surreal soundscape… a landscape of airiness, warmth, and vibrancy. The additions of breathy, melodic vocals to the songs were a major plus. The beats on some of the songs definitely provoked some appreciative head-bobbing. The unique way in which the album tracks are printed in sign language on the CD cover is, I think, an early indication of the barrier-breaking nature of the music inside.

St.Mike’s goes “Into the Woods”

There have been very few times when I dared venture through Brennan Hall so far this semester. However, the few times I have the literal buzz around the upcoming SMC production of Into the Woods has been hard to ignore. (That, and several people have replaced their actual photos on Facebook with production posters).

The play combines catchy musical numbers with reworked fairytales and the original was so popular that they recruited Judi Dench for the Broadway revival. The Dame you guys!

When: 3 performances. Thurs. November 29 – Sat. December 1, 7pm
Where: Isabel Bader Theatre
Details: Tickets available at UofTTix: $12 Adults, $10 Students/Seniors. 15% Discount on Groups of 10 or More.
