U of T Fashion File

During my first year at U of T I learned a lot. I learned that if P then Q, and I also learned to never wear sweatpants on Bloor Street West. People always associate U of T with stress and Starbucks. The new “s” in town should be STYLE. U of T has such a diverse array of fashion hotspots that you get a different vibe from East to West.

Before coming to this school I was like “OMG I so need to buy adult clothes” … so I went to H&M and bought anything that screamed “I listen to obscure bands and don’t eat meat.” That was my first impression of U of T students (I’m from New College, which is at the heart of hipster central). However, after the first semester, I realized that there were SO many different environments here and there is still room for my own style. So I thought it would be fun to put to test the critical reasoning skills I gained in my first year and use them to map out 5 fashion hot-spots on campus.

Methodology: I don’t intend to stereotype by localizing the styles. Rather I created outfits based on observation, empiricism. I have established the following dichotomies according to my observations:

Victoria College (plaid skirt on map) : Rugby-inspired looks. Oxford meets Robert Pattinson. Hey, I ain’t complain’. The highlight of my day is bumping into a Vic boy with Raybans and a classic blazer. It gives me hope that one day I will find my very own Nick Jonas. Vic looks often include Keds, Boyfriend Blazers, Raybans, crests, Rugby stripes and a coffee mug, of course.

The Flying Dutchman: A Powerful Performance

The end of the year has arrived and it’s time to regain my soul by immersing myself in art. One of the first things I did after finishing all my assignments was… go to the opera! This time, I decided to see Richard Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman because I was of course, enchanted by the legend behind it that appeared in Pirate of the Caribbean. Unfortunately, there were no pirates with squid faces who could play the organ with their tentacle beards, but Wagner’s opera was pretty epic in itself. Another Dose of Sexy Dragon

SexyDragon (a.k.a. Yang) is back with another video in which he is running around Toronto in a banana costume. Why? A banana is white on the inside and yellow on the outside — this is how some people describe Asians who are so-called “white-washed.” Yang wants to emphasize how silly it is to label people this way, by being an actual banana!

They Call Me Sexy Dragon A.K.A Crazy Asian Guy Dancing in Public

By now, a lot of you have probably seen the video of this crazy Asian guy dancing in public all across Toronto, groovin’ to Soulja Boy, in his underwear. The purported reason for the video is to break the stereotype that Asians are shy. Are Asians shy? How does this video break that stereotype? Over at blogTO the video has already been receiving some heated comments, from applause, to critique of his dance moves, to some pretty critical commentary on Sexy Dragon as a person.

Well, we at blogUT figured the best way to understand the reason behind this madness was to go talk to the man himself! After all, he’s a U of T Electrical Engineering student. So, what’s his story? Read on to find out! Continue reading “They Call Me Sexy Dragon A.K.A Crazy Asian Guy Dancing in Public”

My Very First Maple Syrup Festival

picture from maplesyrupfest.com

The Sugarbush Maple Syrup festival at Bruce’s Mill was not just a time to drink maple syrup (the best syrup I have ever tasted by the way!), eat pancakes, pet animals, and learn the good ol’ Canadian tradition of getting our beloved Maple sap, but it was also a time to rejoice and bring people of all backgrounds together.  I went with my family and boy did we have great time.
