The Blue Pencil Crayon Hypothesis

“This is exercise four. You need to write the capital of Canada.”

“Oh,” says the grade 9 I’m tutoring, “what’s that?”

A thousand readings and lectures flash through my mind – the roots of oppression, the colonization of the Americas, the myriad sociological, psychological, philosophical reasons a 14-year-old born in Canada would not know its capital.

“Ottawa,” I tell her. “The capital city of Canada is Ottawa. That’s where the Prime Minister lives.”

As she writes the answer on her worksheet and moves on to exercise five – identifying the Great Lakes on a map of the country – I reflect on the past sessions I’ve spent volunteering, for a few hours a week, at a high-risk high school in North York. The program, co-ordinated by the Center for Community Partnerships on campus, has been challenging and rewarding. Challenging because it demands waking up at six-thirty and working with thirty high-energy kids with smartphones and iPods and serious attitude for three straight hours on a Monday; rewarding because it lets me put school work and anxiety out of my head, at least for a little while. There are times, like when students in grade 9 ask about something they should have learned in grade 2, that academic notions creep back into my head and the students become subjects of thought. Mostly, though, they’re distracted, disrespectful, delightful nuisances.

The University of Toronto has a reputation for placing academics above social lives, extra-curriculars, and athletics; a reputation consistently upheld by its bookish students. This is nothing new, of course – UTians figured this out decades ago, and have been blogging about it since.* The problem is, we constantly frame it in the context of stress or of fun, and rarely consider the other possible side-effects of getting swallowed up by an undergraduate program.

One such side-effect is the theorization, abstraction, and lesssonification of our universes that comes from studying them. In the Humanities, at least, post-modernism is so heavily concerned with developing new terminologies and frameworks that it’s way too easy to see real, concrete things as avatars of their academic subjects. The screen you’re looking at – is it a computer monitor or a product of a neo-colonial system of exploitation? You see what I’m getting at – it happens every time you stop talking and start discoursing or dialoguing.

We need a balance. We need to offset the abstract world of our studies by entering the real world and realizing that, however meaningful an application of Standpoint Theory may be at the time, it’s not going to shade in those Great Lakes any quicker. The merit of the TDSB Tutors in Schools program and those like it – and there are many – is that the experiences are so real and so engaging that they offer perspective where it is otherwise absent. In doing so, they allow us to reflect with some degree of clarity on our own lives, academic or otherwise.

I highly recommend them.

How to Make a Long-Distance Relationship Work

OK, so your special someone goes to another school on the other side of the country and you two have come to the mutual decision to keep things going despite the distance.  You’re ecstatic: you get to stay with the one you love, and (hopefully) you will both remain true to each other until the day you finally graduate from the money-sucking institution that is university.  You spend the summer bracing yourself for the inevitable separation, frantically praying that something will somehow force your significant other to stay with you forever. When the day finally comes, you put on a brave face, shed as few tears as you possibly can, but assure yourself and them that all will be fine and that the time will just fly by.

But let’s face it, being in a long distance relationship sucks.

But we’re lucky.  We live in an age where communication is easy, instantaneous, and expansive.  Can you imagine living in a time where a text would take three weeks to reach someone, and their reply another three weeks on top of that?  Six weeks for a reply to, “Hey, what’s up?”  Obviously the letters would be slightly more substantial, but the general idea is there.  Nowadays, doing the distance thing is nowhere near as much of a headache and, by following a few simple rules, everything should work out fine.

1. Communicate

This can’t be stressed enough.  Not speaking to each other on a regular basis instigates paranoia, jealousy, rage, fear, sadness, and everything in between.  So skip all of it.  Set a time for speaking every night, whether it be via text, Skype, or phone. Each conversation need not last hours on end, but just simply going through your day – no matter how mundane – is important. All the boring crap you do throughout the day might not seem vital, but sharing your life is. Think of it like you’re finally seeing each other at the end of the day, and you’re simply swapping stories. And listen. Always, always, ALWAYS listen to your partner’s stories as well. Communicating is a two-way street, and you can hardly expect any respect if you’re not willing to give some in return.

2.  Set Goals for Yourselves

It might depend on how serious you really are about your partner, but having a goal you’re both working towards helps with separation anxiety. There doesn’t have to be a set plan or agenda, but a general idea of where the relationship is heading can work wonders. Maybe think about what you both plan to do after you graduate, and see if these aspirations can somehow be meshed together. Or, if that’s thinking too far in advance, think about the summer and if you will be able to spend a good chunk of it together. But, at the same time, don’t narrow your dreams based on your partner’s dreams. If you’ve always wanted to spend a summer in Germany, do it.  Your life is your life, and you don’t want to wake up in 50 years asking “what if?”

3.  Be Clear About your Expectations

Honest is the best policy.  If you’re not completely committed to the relationship when you part, explain this to your partner. Don’t sugarcoat anything, and be clear and direct. You might be willing to have an open relationship, but your partner might be about to get down on one knee and pop the question. Then again, the situation could be reversed and you could be the one left hanging. So just be honest. Explain what you expect out of the relationship and cross your fingers that he/she feels the same way.

4. Try to See Each Other as Often as Possible

It’ll be a strain in every sense of the word, and will probably put a pretty good dent in your wallet, but it will be more than worth the effort. Even though you’ll most likely see each other during holidays and the summer vacation (assuming you’re both from the same city, although many couples don’t have this luxury), a visit every now and again helps keep things going strong. Phone conversations can only go so far, so try to get some actual, physical contact in every once in a while.  It’s understandable that this might not be feasible every weekend or even every other weekend, but both of you should plan some quality time together. And don’t feel guilty about staying in the entire time, watching movies and eating junk.  You’ve got to pack a lot of companionship into a short period of time, after all.

5. Don’t Be Afraid to Take Risks

It sounds silly, but you have to keep things interesting. This doesn’t necessarily imply doing something as racy as sending nude pictures of yourself, but simply sending a text telling your partner you’re thinking about them sends a positive message. Literally.  But try not to overindulge in this activity, as too much lovey-dovey crap might diminish the effects of your initial sentiments. Keep things spontaneous and unpredictable. This is not only a lesson in love, but applies to life as well; taking risks might reward you in ways you’ve never thought of.

And there you have it – five easy ways to help make a long distance relationship work. Hopefully these tips will help you conquer the separation between you and your significant other. But the most important piece of advice is this: remember to keep the love alive. Even when things get hard and stressful, remind yourself that there is a reason you’re both in this relationship and that you do love each other.  Keep that thought in mind, and the love between you and your partner will most definitely stand the test of time.

There can never be too many varieties of poutine, so try a different one for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at Smoke’s. They’ve recently opened a new location close to Bathurst and Bloor. The other location on Adelaide might demand a fair amount of walking, but it’s probably for your own good.

2) The Ideal Catering or Blue Chip Truck

100 St. George Street, M5S 3G3

50 St. George Street, M5S 3H4

I know at least one person who would frown in disgust at the mere thought of eating “greasy truck food”, but you really don’t have to go that far off U of T grounds to find ones with decent poutine. Both trucks have similar menus, and are located along St. George Street – in front of Sid Smith and the Astronomy & Astrophysics Building, respectively.

3) Burger King

267 College Street, M5T 1R6

Their Angry Poutine still wasn’t as angry as that one homeless guy who just wanted his goddamn drink.

4) W Burger Bar

The pulled pork poutine at W Burger Bar

I wish I had discovered this place sooner. They serve their regular (Quebecois) poutine over thinly-cut fries, and also offer pulled-pork and beef varieties. But I’m going to go off on a tangent for a moment and mention that they also have awesome drink specials! $10 pitchers and $2 shots? Easily one of my new favourite watering holes downtown.

And as a side note, they won’t accept your Ontario health card as identification, but they will take your UK driver’s license. It might sound silly, but the waitress did offer an explanation, that “they’re older so they’re, like, easier to fake”. That’s probably not how it works, but I’ll let it go just because this place is great.

The Saag (image from BlogTO)

Their raved-about Saag poutine is a unique variation. The fries are served in a thick curry sauce of pureed spinach and paneer cheese, but it didn’t exactly blow my mind like it did for those guys on Yelp. It might have something to do with the fact that it took almost 40 minutes to get to my table. Either way, you’ll have to go to Kensington market and find out yourself.

6) O’Grady’s Tap & Grill

171 College Street, M5T 1P7

Apparently, they have poutine served with wedge-cut fries on their menu. I wouldn’t know because my friends and I would be too busy verbally abusing each other with beer-induced slurs over at the foosball table.

7) Lick’s Homeburgers & Ice Cream

720 Spadina Avenue, M5S 2T9

Lastly, I’m only including Lick’s on this list to warn all poutine enthusiasts to turn the other way. It’s just not the same with shredded cheese…

That should be more than enough options for you to have an enjoyable lunch and a satisfied tummy. And possibly some form of premature heart disease. Enjoy, and eat responsibly.

Cold? How About a Steaming Bowl of Ramen?

Winter in Toronto is not something you can take lightly. A short walk across campus suddenly becomes unbearable in the cold weather. So there’s no better way to warm up than a trip to Kinton Ramen where you can enjoy a hot bowl of authentic Japanese ramen. It’s located in Chinatown on the corner of the charming little Elm Street, lined up with other small restaurants. Not to mention that it’s only a short walk through the cold if you’ve just finished up classes or are taking a lunch break.

Kinton Ramen only recently opened this year by the same owners of the ever popular Guu Izakaya and Guu Sakabar, both of which are identifiable by their simple woodsy design and trademark black colors. If you’re a student at U of T and especially if you are a Foodie, then you definitely have heard of, or have been, to one of the Guu chains. And if you’ve been there you’ll recall the vibrant energy and the noises that characterize Guu. Although Kinton is not as loud, it is certainly just as busy and crowded with people coming in and coming out for a quick meal and, I warn you, there are almost always people waiting outside. Not to mention that it’s a small narrow place with the bar counter taking up most of the space. You’ll probably end up sitting next to complete strangers and even occasionally bumping elbows. But, if they have that many customers despite it all, then you know they’re good.

It’s no wonder why it’s so popular. They are one of the few Japanese restaurants that specialize in ramen, and also probably the only one that’s run by Japanese people. Maybe it’s just me but when I hear Japanese from behind the counter I feel assured that what I will be eating is authentic Japanese. A bite of the classical miso ramen sent me back to the small ramen shop in Shibuya of many years ago. But that is not to say they always stick to traditional flavours. While most of the menu consists of the basic types of Japanese ramen that I was used to, there is one that caught my eye – the Cheese Ramen! I saw many bowls coming out with a mound of cheese on top, probably for those who were curious about the unique flavour combination. But it’s not just cheese that you can top your ramen off with.

The fun of choosing your menu includes choosing various toppings like garlic, egg, or even butter for the free-spirited. And if you don’t think that’s not enough to fill you up to brave the walk back home, there are a variety of appetizers like Spicy Fried Chicken. For those of you who are more health-conscious, there is probably nothing for you there. At best, they have a veggie ramen and a pork salad on the menu. You can tell they really love their pork, which comes topped off with every bowl , with your choice of a pork shoulder or pork belly both delightfully fatty and tender.

By the time you’re done you’ll surely be sweating both from the ramen and the surrounding body heat!

Amnesty International Toronto Presents the 7th Annual Reel Awareness Film Festival

Taking place at the Carlton Cinema from November 15 to 18, the festival features inspiring and heartbreaking stories that promise to enrich our understanding and awareness of the world around us.

The festival kicks off with A Whisper to a Roar – a feature-length documentary focusing on the compelling personal stories of democracy activists in Egypt, Malaysia, Ukraine, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe, as they struggle against oppressive regimes to bring freedom to their people.  Shot over the span of three years, the film is a deeply affecting and inspiring portrait of the struggle for justice.. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Ben Moses

The highlight of the festival is You Don’t Like the Truth: 4 Days Inside Guantánamo – a compelling documentary based on recently declassified security footage of Omar Khadr’s interrogation at Guantánamo Bay. Screening on Friday, November 16, the film offers a disturbing inside look at Khadr’s imprisonment and analyzes the political and legal implications of the polarizing case.

Saturday and Sunday’s programs each feature four hard-hitting documentaries that examine human rights issues in Israel, Palestine, Mexico, Egypt, and Canada and focus on topics ranging from corporate responsibility and torture to women and Aboriginal rights.

Many of the films will be followed by Q&A sessions with filmmakers, community activists, and human rights experts. Amnesty International will also be on-hand to provide further information about the issues raised by the films, as well as to provide opportunities to take action on these issues.

“This is an outstanding lineup of films that address major global issues and show deeply compelling personal struggles against difficult odds,” said Elena Dumitru, organizer of the festival. “We hope the Reel Awareness Film Festival can help spark constructive discussion on global human rights issues and inspire Torontonians to take an interest in such issues.”
