Live Blogging From The Freeze Tuition Fees Campout

University of Toronto Freeze Tuition Fees Campout

As I’m typing (which is quite a challenge right now, with cold hands and mittens on), UTSU and crew are setting up their campsite for the Freeze the Fees Campout. The tents have been assembled and the message “Freeze Tuition Fees” is spray-painted red-on-white on the snow, on front campus in front of University College.

It’s cold here, but spirit are high. People are shouting instructions, mattresses are being unrolled, tarps are being pinned down, and tents are being blown over in the wind.

“We’re going to have a campfire, hot dogs, and marshmallows”, Jen, the UTSU president tells me.

Well, a campfire sounds good. It’s really cold out here. Oh, did I say that already? My best wishes to the campers. I hope they don’t literally freeze for a tuition fee freeze.

Nothing to do on Thursday?

Want something a little different to do on Thursday? Hart House has a pair of unique events going on. In the Gallery Grill Lounge you can catch Whisky a Go Go – A tutored sampling of six whiskeys. For $30 you get in on the on the sampling along with some hors d’ouvers and three free cocktails… plus complimentary jazz. See the flyer here.

For something not as pricey (or say free), over in the arbor room Mr. Something Something is playing. I won’t even attempt to describe them but, to say the least, they sound pretty interesting, check out the link for more info: Mr Something Something Concert

Whisky a Go Go starts at seven, the concert at nine.

Torontoist post on blogUT

Big news! We’ve been linked from Torontoist.com! Many thanks to David Topping (editor of Torontoist and fellow U of T student), who wrote about us in the encouraging article.

Also, (most likely due to the link from Torontoist) CIUT 89.5 FM, the radio station on campus, has invited us to be interviewed on their “Beyond the Classroom” program, a program focusing on University of Toronto events and issues of interest. We’re scheduled to be on at 11:45 am this Thursday, Feb 1, 2007.

Looks like we’ve got expectations to meet now, so we’ll work even harder to put up quality content! If you’re a first time visitor at blogUT, welcome! We hope you like us! Please drop us a comment if you have any suggestions, ideas, if you’d like to contribute, or if you’d just like to say “Hi!”. Tell us what you’d like to see. Tell us where we can improve. We’d love it if you did!

Mondays: Pay What You Can nights at CanStage

2007-01-30-canstage.jpg

Toronto plays host to a lot of top quality theatre throughout the year, some established and some making their world premiere. One reliable source of excellent drama is CanStage, which presents plays at the Bluma Appel and Berkeley Theatres downtown. It also presents an outdoor Shakespeare play in High Park each summer, called “Dream in High Park”.

The best thing about CanStage is that Monday night shows are always pay-what-you-can, so you don’t have to pay the exorbitant $65 prices for regular adult entry. Just show up the day of the show and pick up your tickets (either during the day or just before the show). Although if Monday nights are reserved for poker and even live theatre won’t change your mind, tickets are always $20 for people under 30 with ID.
