OneBigU: Learn Something, Give Something

One Big U Eric Cheung, a U of T alumnus (Computer Engineering ’06) wrote in to blogUT to tell us about a website called OneBigU. We thought it was pretty cool, so we’d like to share it with you.

I think OneBigU is a pretty neat idea. Tell us about it in the simplest terms. 3 sentences, each 3 words or less.
Help Students. Raise Money. Save Darfur.

Okay, now in a bit more detail. What is the function of OneBigU? What’s the goal?
OneBigU’s mission is to build a community of students from different schools around the world where they could learn from each other. Students can ask and answer each other’s questions. Every correct answer earns a little bit of money, and the student can opt to donate to a Darfur charity.

OneBigU is also partnered with the non-profit organization, Help Darfur Now (HDN). Founded by three New Jersey high school students, HDN is dedicated to raising funds and awareness of the genocide in Darfur, Sudan.

When and how did you come up with the idea? Continue reading “OneBigU: Learn Something, Give Something”

FLRT100H1: An Elective in Flirting

So there I sat in Flirting 101, on Valentine’s Day, slightly breathless and mildly sweaty. I was the only guy in the room of 7 girls: 2 presenters and 5 other attendees. Mind you, that’s not why I was sweaty. I had to rush over from the gym to Hart House, in my post-workout state of perspiration, to attend this workshop on flirting given by the University of Toronto SEC (Sexual Education and Peer Counselling Centre).

So the University of Toronto Sexual Education and Peer Counselling Centre gives all sorts of workshops on topics surrounding sex: from “Negotiating Healthy (Sexual) Relationships” to “Making Safer Sex, Greater Sex!” to condoms (wait, that’s not a talk, they just give out free condoms). Anyway, this particular workshop caught my eye. I’m always curious to learn a thing or two. Knowledge is power right? Plus, in case you haven’t read it yet… my Online Dating Adventure ended less than fruitfully. Maybe there’s room for improvement?

If nothing else, it might make an interesting article. Continue reading “FLRT100H1: An Elective in Flirting”
