Rocky Horror Picture Show

Boo!!! It’s almost Halloween!  In a couple of days, on Friday none the less, it will be that time of year again when “normal” people have implicit permission for one night to be someone or something else, and to stretch their boundaries. That sense of freedom of possibility and unhinging of all rules is what makes Halloween one of the most interesting if not enjyable holidays.

In that spirit, the adored cult movie, The Rocky Horror Picture Show , is playing at the Bloor Cinema. This classic Transylvanian tale about a transvestite host named Dr. Frank-N-Furter, who throws a party with an assortment of strange and hilarious guests that an unsuspecting couple crash when they get stranded at the host’s massive dark mansion, is almost indescribable in its effect. It is a flamboyant, unapologetic musical that has sprung favourite sing-a-long songs like the Time Warp. If you’ve already seen it, have you seen it with a pack house of avid fans singing and screaming along while an actual full cast of um…actors play every part and act every line on a stage below the movie screen as the movie plays? If not, I must say it is the only true way of experiencing such a cult phenomenon. There are three showings of the movie this Halloween, one on Thursday (today!) and two showings on the 31st. My strong recommendation is for the two on the 31st, which are guaranteed to be packed, but buy your tickets a.s.a.p., as they sell out, and arrive early to get the best seats.

Weekly Photo – Edition 4

I seem to be late this week.

Last week, I managed to drag my gear to campus to capture the Autumn colours. Unfortunately, I only had about an hour to use it :). Here’s what I did manage to capture:

Best Viewed Large

The above was taken in the little garden out back of UC.

This one was taken in front of Hart House by the cannons.

Bonus photo: I don’t think it’ll be long until these birds head south.

That’s it for now. See you next week. I’m thinking Halloween edition? I’ll be on campus with my gear again, ready to capture your costumes.

CAMPUS-WIDE CIGARETTE BUTT CLEANUP!

Leave The Pack Behind is a Health Promotions group on campus that
provides information about tobacco use and cessation support to
students. This month they have embarked upon an Environmental Theme highlighting the effects of cigarette butt litter. LTPB recently participated in the TD Cleanup through oUTreach and have been
surprised by the volume of cigarette butt litter on campus. Cigarette
butts are not biodegradable; are harmful to small animals and lead to
many harmful chemicals being leached into the soil.
Their team is planning a Cigarette butt Clean-up on campus during the
week of Nov 3rd-7th.  Along with volunteers, they would be picking
up and bagging the cigarette butts along St. George Street. They are
also hoping to have residence environmental teams participate by
cleaning up their residences. At the end of the week, they would be
displaying the bags of cigarette butts and holding an awareness event
in the Sid Smith courtyard with the aim of reducing cigarette butt
litter on campus.

They are currently recruiting more volunteers, if you would be
interested in joining please contact them at

When: Nov 3rd-7th- Along St. George Street
Contact Info: Leave the Pack Behind

Here are just some of the reasons why it is important to raise awareness about cigarette butt litter:

The Words Of A Rock Star

I have been a U2 fan for a while, and I have great respect for Bono as a musician and a lyricist. And because I have respect for him as a musician and a lyricist, my ears are more open to him as an activist, and my mind subconsciously more yielding to his arguments. On October 22, Bono gave a speech at the California Women’s Conference, asking Americans for continued support for Africa even in the wake of the recent financial crisis. He made some interesting and important points, but for me, the speech also raised some questions about causes and their spokespeople. In the end, what are the words of a rock star? A necessary awakening, or too much noise?

Deepa Mehta @ Hart House

There are some movies that just stay with you, that keep coming back to you months and years after you’ve seen them. For me, one of those movies was Deepa Mehta‘s Water. On Wednesday, October 29th, Mehta herself will be coming to Hart House to discuss her new film, Heaven on Earth. After speaking, she will be answering questions from the audience. This is an incredible opportunity to speak with a brilliant director, and I know that I, for one, don’t want to miss it.

when: Wenesday, October 29
time: 12:00-1:30pm
where: Hart House Debates Room
additional info: this event is open to all and admission is free, but space is limited.
