“Home Movie” at Toronto After Dark (and more)

Last night I went to see my second movie at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival. It’s an American one entitled “Home Movie” and is supposedly the scariest film at the 2008 festival.

If you have kids, Home Movie might cause you to never look at them the same way again. The film is about an American family living in a house beside the woods in the middle of nowhere. In the beginning they appear to be a normal family with loving parents, but we quickly see that this is not the case. There is something eerie about the children, Jack and Emily, who are twins. They don’t talk or smile for a good chunk of the beginning of the movie, and seem to share many secrets with each other. (more…)

Revealing “Rumors”

I had the chance to see Trinity College Dramatic Society’s staging of Neil Simon’s “Rumors” last night at the George Ignatieff Theatre, and I really enjoyed myself. As a member of the theatre community for the past decade, I often shed a critical eye on all aspects of the production, from set design to lighting cues. Producing, directing and managing shows force you to look at shows in particular ways, and those habits are not easily dropped. However, with all these things working against me (and knowing I had to review the show here) I found myself taken in with the story and characters and eagerly awaiting the denouement of the plot.

I always finds it helps to have a blurb about the plot before going into the show, especially with up to 8 actors on stage, and was disappointed there wasn’t one in the program. It’s a story about a posh party being held by Charlie Brock and his wife Myra to celebrate their 10th anniversary, however these characters are never seen. When the first couple arrives they hear a gunshot and find Charlie with a flesh wound and Myra missing. What ensues next, as each couple arrives, is a swirling mess of rumors surrounding the truth about what has happened to Charlie and Myra and why.

For most patrons, what you want to know is – will I understand it? will it be an enjoyable evening? was it worth my money?

For the answer to these and more questions, read on.

Weekly Photo – Edition 3

Hello again.

Not much of a photo this week. Here’s a nice quiet spot on campus where you will occasionally see me eating my lunch.

It’s right between LM and MP, sports a few tables with umbrellas, and a decent fountain (although I expect them to shut it down when the frost moves in).  At night, the pillars you see in the photo will glow an eerie blue. There is a convenient mens room located through those orange doors and up the staircase on the second floor. It’s a perfect spot for light studying/relaxing, and it doesn’t get too windy due to the high surrounding buildings. I even get Wi-Fi access here!

I’m going to stop now before it begins to sound like I’m trying to sell you property. Check it out for yourself!

Have you been submitting photos to the blogUT Flickr pool? I encourage you to join here. I’ll start grabbing photos to post alongside my work once it picks up a bit.

It’s directed by U of T second year student Victoria Wang, who is a venturing in the pleasures of theater by directing this production. In order to participate for a chance to win a pair of tickets, we would like you tell us what is the best rumor you have heard about UofT, and if it ended up being true (if it’s about someone, please avoid mentioning names or otherwise your comment won’t get published). The winner will be contacted on Thursdays, October 23. Please don’t forget to include your e-mail (it won’t be publised).

The show will play from Wednesday, October 22 to Saturday, October 25, every night at 8:00pm.  The venue is the George Ignatieff Theater, 15 Devonshire Place.
