Journey from the Fall

Film Finds in this post: “Exotica” (free) presented by CINSSU. “Journey from the Fall” ($10 with student ID) presented by Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival. “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” (free) presented by Latin American Studies. Read on for details.

This week, the Free Friday Film presented by CINSSU is Atom Egoyan’s Exotica. (Interesting side note, Atom Egoyan graduated from U of T’s Trinity College, and is actually lecturing at U of T on a 3 year term as Dean’s Distinguished Visitor in Theatre, Film, Music and Visual Studies.) Exotica follows a complex group of characters who frequent “Exotica”, a strip club on the outskirts of Toronto. Friday January 19th, 2007, 7:00 pm at Innis Town Hall, 2 Sussex Ave.

Latin American Studies presents “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” (also known as “Chavez: Inside the Coup”), a film about the first Latin American coup of the 21st century, and the world’s first media coup. On April 12th 2002 the world awoke to the news that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez had been removed from office and had been replaced by a new intrim government. Follow the events through this award winning documentary film. This film is free, shown on Thursday January 18th, 2007 at 6:30 pm at Innis Town Hall.

Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival, the Vietnamese Association of Toronto, and the film’s director Ham Tran will be presenting Journey from the Fall, a film about the events after the fall of Saigon in 1975. Tickets are $10 with student ID, and the proceeds will support the Vietnamese Boat People Museum Project in Ottawa, with some funds gowing toward the activities of Reel Asian. The film will be shown at Innis Town Hall on Saturday January 20th, 2007 at 7:00 pm.

Also, I’d like to remind you about the film mentioned in the previous Film Finds post, “Last Life in the Universe”. It’s being shown on Friday January 19th at NFB Theatre, 150 John Street, 7:00 pm. $8 for non-members of CJS. This film has my personal recommendation.
