Get Your Daily Bread

Now, there’s nothing quite like a freshly baked loaf of bread. Warm, steamy buns of goodness, this must be what heaven tastes like. I used to live on McCaul street, the same street as Silverstein’s Bakery. Quite often, I used to smell the delicious scent of baked bread while walking home. But it took me a whole year before I figured out that I could go INSIDE and buy freshly baked bread!

It’s certainly not very well advertised. There’s no clear indication of an entrance, and no sign to tell you to go in. But if you haven’t been yet, you’ve been missing out!

Inside, it’s quite a sight, with racks and racks of bread sitting to cool and workers in white uniforms shuffling about. Head to the cash register and you usually have to wait a while for someone to notice you and offer their help. Point to the loaf you’d like and you’ll get one of those. You can also ask them what’s just baked, and get a piping hot loaf in your hand with that fresh-out-of-the-oven taste.

The entrance to the place is kind of hard to find, so I’ve made a picture for you. The yellow arrow points to the door.

Hey, awesome! I didn’t know you could buy from them directly, but my father told me they’ve been baking for hotels and restaurants for decades.

Holy crap! I’ve worked near there for over 10 years, and usually walk by the place at least once every week or two heading over to Baldwin for lunch, and I had no idea they sold bread on-site!

They use their bread at the Stem on Queen Street, or at least they used to back in the early 90s when I ate lunch there almost every Saturday. Mmmmm.
