Aaah, the familiar view of front campus (Make that soon-to-be familiar view for the frosh students.). Another school year kicks off with a flurry of activity.

What does the start of the school year entail? Well, consider this: the first few lectures cover introductory stuff, the profs are giving you time to get your text books, there are no laboratories and assignments… yet. So, logically, this is one of the best times of the year for you to go out, party, and generally have a good time. For the frosh students who are new, it’s a great idea to explore the campus and the city, get to know a few clubs and meet some new people.

Your college and residence probably have a slew of things going on. But the campus is huge, and well, we’re located in the very middle of the very happening city of Toronto. This all translates to a ton of fun stuff.

So, with that in mind, blogUT brings you our very own guide to some back to school fun. Check it out:

There is a ton of stuff going on, so we’re not going to hold your hand and take you there (though we’d love to). We’ll point you in the right direction, and you can find the details. Here goes!

Saturday September 8th

Toronto Poetry Slam
What: Spoken word poetry. With spice.
Why: Because poetry slam rocks. (I’m completely serious about this. You’ll be convinced once you’ve been to one)
Details: It’s at the Drake Hotel. Get there about 8:30pm. More details here.

D-Day at Gladstone Hotel
What: a night of competitive & recreational gaming on numerous games, including the hugely popular rhythm game Dance Dance Revolution
Why: Because there’s DDR! Because geek is the new chic.
Details: See the event page.

Lee’s Palace Dance Cave
What: Full on Alternative Music Dance Club
Why: Too many reasons. Because you like dancing to rock, because you like indie rock boys and girls, because it’s in dingy and sketchy in the most awesome way, because it’s always free with student ID.
Details: See the website.

Sunday September 9th

Niagara Region Day Trip
What: exactly what it sounds like. Organized by the International Student Centre
Why: Because water + gravity is really cool.
Details: Ticket are only $35. Departs 9 am. See ISC website.

Monday September 10th

Free Hug Day
What: Hugs, everywhere!
Why: Because hugs are nice. I’m pretty sure they did a study on this.
Details: See Facebook event page.

Salon Voltaire at Gladstone Hotel
What: “Salon Voltaire was inspired by the days of the Enlightenment, when the intellectually curious met in salons to discuss topics of the day.”
Why: Mais naturellement, because you’re an intellectual.
Details: Starts at 6:30. See this page.

Tuesday September 11th

Student Services Fest
What: They said there’ll be free pizza. Oh… and you get to learn about student services.
Why: Free pizza. But let’s be honest… the slices are small and we need to jump through hoops to get this. I feel like a monkey every time I do it. But at least I’m not a starving monkey.
Details: 11am - 2pm. Free pizza. See their webpage.

Wednesday September 12th

Hart House Wide Open House
What: Hang out and have a look around Hart House
Why: Because Hart House rocks. There’s prizes and stuff.
Details: 11am - 2 pm. Link to poster (pdf) here.

Autumn Bounty Buffet at Gladstone Hotel
What: Autumn harvest on the dinner table.
Why: Because you’re already sick of rez food. Because it looks tasty!
Details: $38 per person. 6:30 pm. See event page.

Friday September 14th

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
What: First play at Hart House Theatre’s 2007-2008 season. Forum tells the story of the likable slave, Pseudolus, and his hilarious quest for freedom.
Why: Hahaha, because it is sponsored by Trojan (yes the condom maker). It’s gotta be a good play!
Details: 8pm. See this page.
