It’s tax return season ladies and gents, and that means sweet, sweet tax return money! But there’s just one little snag: you’ve got to work through pages and pages of forms and general headache to get your money. Luckily, all’s not lost. You don’t have to do it on your own. Read on for the list of campus resources that’ll help you with filing your tax return.
UTSU Income Tax Clinic
Appointments begin March 26 and run through to April 26, 2007. Appointments are available between the hours of 9:30 am and 4:00 pm. All appointments are held at the UTSU building at 12 Hart House Circle in the basement. To make a tax clinic appointment on the St. George campus, please contact [email protected]. More details available here, at the UTSU webpage.
ISC Income Tax Walk-In Clinics for International Students
Beginning on March 15th, The ISC will be hosting daily clinics to assist international students with filing their income tax returns (for the 2006 income tax year). March 15 – April 19, 2007, from 2 – 5 p.m. All sessions will be held at the ISC on the Main Floor.
GSU Tax Info Session?
Poor grad students can’t go to the UTSU tax clinics, so I emailed the GSU to ask if they’ll be holding something similar. This was their response:
The GSU holds a tax information session each year with representatives from Revenue Canada. This year’s will be in mid-April and will soon be advertised via the weekly email digest and the GSU website.
Well fellow grad students, we’ll just have to sit tight and hope the GSU comes through for us. Oh wait, actually, no we don’t. Luckily, we have access to FREE online filing through UFile.
UFile FREE Online Filing
The Canadian Federation of Students and UFile.ca, Canada’s #1 online tax preparation Web site, have joined together to provide FREE online tax preparation and filing for all Canadian post-secondary students. Simply go here.
Just a friendly reminder: generally, your return for 2006 has to be filed on or before April 30, 2007. If you file your return after April 30, 2007, your GST/HST credit payments may be delayed. For more information about your tax return, you can also visit the Canadian Revenue Agency’s page: all about your tax return.

Not all of us get money back, you know.
Freelancing means you get raped at tax time.

Seriously?! Even with the tuition credits and other deductions?
Wow, you must be making quite a nice sum. In that case, congrats!
