U of T North Korea Reserach Group Presents: “A State of Mind”
November 14th, 2007 by ColumThis movie is truly awesome, and is the best depiction of life in North Korea (or at least Pyongyang) that exists. I highly recommend everyone to come out to this, the gymnists are also truly amazing…if there was ever an Olympic event in mass gymnastics…the North Koreans would win it hands down.
The newly created North Korea Research Group in conjunction with the International Relations Soicety are hosting the BBC Documentary ‘A State of Mind.’ It will be held at the George Ignatieff Theatre at 15 Devonshire Place, and the event will be free, with some nubblies as well. Want to know a bit more?
A rare look behind the curtains of North Korea, “A State of Mind” looks at the lives of two girls and their families as they prepare their minds and bodies for the national Mass Games. The fascinating and mysterious centerpiece of the nation’s politico-religious mindset, the Mass Games are homage to head of state Kim Jong Il and his deceased father Kim Il Sung. The games are the ultimate physical demonstration of the surrendering of the individual to the nation and the raising up of the nation’s leader to God-like status.
Following Director/Producer Daniel Gordon’s successful “The Game of Their Lives” in 2003, North Korea granted him unprecedented permission to make a second documentary about the Mass Games. In so-doing, the extremely secretive and inward regime of Kim Jong Il allowed Gordon relatively great freedom to interview the two girls and their families about their preparations for the Games, and to also photograph portions of the games themselves.
