When I introduce a show or event to you, my dear readers, I often begin with some sort of context, like a comment about the writer or my expectations for the show. I don’t need to do that in this case, though, because all I need to tell you is that Evil Dead – The Musical is a musical with a splatter zone. A zone, where you can get splattered.

Yeah. Do I actually need to say anything else about it? If so, I could tell you that it is a musical based on the Evil Dead movie franchise, and that it won the Audience Choice Dora Award in 2007. I could refer you to the praise that Toronto critics have sung of it, or even link you to a video of one of the numbers. But I don’t need to do that, because you already know that Evil Dead – The Musical is a musical with a splatter zone. And frankly, if that doesn’t make you want to see it already, I don’t what possibly could. (Descriptions of a clever plot and an awesome score might be helpful for some people, but did you see the bit about THE $&%#ING SPLATTER ZONE?!)

We at blogUT are all about the altruism, which is we why we are giving away two free tickets to the show. All you have to do is comment or tweet a micro-review of the best musical you’ve ever seen. We won’t give you a word limit, but we’ll say that brevity gets extra points. The best – cleverest and most informative – micro-review wins a pair of tickets to see Evil Dead – The Musical.

Going to musicals is like the lottery. Either it will be excruciatingly painful to stay awake or it will be amazingly entertaining. Going to “Avenue Q” was like winning the lottery for me. Even better, I got free tickets, because a buddy of mine was working as the tech guy. Life is great when you have theatre friends! But back to the musical: “Avenue Q” won some big awards, one being the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2003. I went to see it at the Lower Ossington theatre with a friend and we sat in the back role. He was sceptical because “muppet shows are for kids” which was accurate to some point, for I was jumping like a child on ecstasy. I grew up with Sesame street which, by the way, is an inspiration to “Avenue Q”. The musical follows the story of Princeton, a recent college graduate, who finds a place to live on a fictional street in New York: Avenue Q. His struggles and the reality that hits him are all expressed in ironic songs to which many of us university students can relate to. When it started, my friend was quite surprised. Little did we know, for we hadn’t researched the play before we went, that very mature topics were concerned. Topics like “Everyone’s a little bit racist”, “What do you do with a BA in English?” and the “Internet is for porn”. The cleverness in the jokes, the changing voices (each puppeteer had at least 2 muppets in hand) and the hilarious cultural references made this musical my all time favourite and its a definite must see. The songs are incredibly catchy, the actors astonishingly talented and the musical itself might leave you crying with laughter.
Its definitely a must see for every musical lover and identity confused individual, but also a must-see for every non-musical lover, because it is truly unique.
