If the thrill of sprinting your way through Canada’s largest museum isn’t enough for you, how about a chance at immortality? Genie Award winning filmmaker Nick de Pencier will be on hand to document the run.

Free Yoga on Campus

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

yoga_on_campus.jpg In between all the midterms, assignments, the projects and papers, sometimes it’s really nice to find the time to breath. Just breathe. To relax, calm down, stretch, clear your mind, and tune in to your body. That’s exactly what I experienced when I attended the free yoga session offered by the Atheletics Centre last week. It was my first time trying Yoga, and in case you’ve also never tried it, I would highly recommend that you attend one of the free weekly sessions to get a taste. It’s calming, relaxing, and invigorating: a very positive overall experience. Why not? It’s free!

The Atheletics Centre offers weekly sessions of Yoga Fit, a low stress Yoga routine. You can sign up at the Athletics Centre main office or you can just show up. Mats are provided for you, so just come in comfortable clothing.
When: Every Friday, 12:10-12:55pm.
Where: Upper Gym at the Athlectics Centre. Finding the Upper Gym is a bit of a quest, but just follow the signs and you should be fine.

Also, the First Nations House and the Graduate Student Union partner to offer free weekly Hatha Yoga classes. Registration is NOT necessary, so just bring your own mat, towel and wear comfortable clothing.
When: Every Thursday, 12:30 – 2:00 pm
Where: GSU Gymnasium, 16 Bancroft Avenue.

Vegetarian 101: Moving Towards a Heart Healthy Diet

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

Vegetarian 101I was all set to write a post about The Real Dirt on Food all day conference on March 17th at Hart House, but sadly, the tickets on UofTtix are already sold out! Well, looks like we’ve got a lot of people interested in issues on food sustainability. Either that, or the damn scalpers jumped on this one (I really hope not though, because scalping tickets for a conference on food sustainability just seems very very wrong).

So instead I have something else green for you: Vegetarian 101, a series of informative talks organized by the Toronto Vegetarian Association on being vegetarian:

Saturday March 3 – Introduction to vegetarian nutrition.
Saturday March 17 – Protein, carbohydrates and fats.
Saturday March 31 – Adopting healthy lifestyle habits

Where: Room 200 in Northern District Library (40 Orchard View Blvd. west side of Yonge and just north of Eglinton)
Details: Each talk runs from 3-4pm. Admission is free and no reservation is necessary. Space is limited so arrive early to ensure you get a seat! You can find more details on their website.

Keeping Varsity Centre for the students - Faculty seeks student support to make vision a reality

varsity center pic

Just five weeks old, the domed Varsity Centre field is getting a rigorous daily workout. Masses of students regularly spill onto the state-of-the-art turf to play intramural soccer and ultimate Frisbee, practice with their intercollegiate team, or hit a few golf balls at the new driving range.

To sustain its vision of Varsity Centre as a students-first facility, the Faculty of Physical Education and Health is requesting an increase to the student athletic fee to help offset the operating costs and avoid boosting outside rentals to pay the bills.

The Facultys 2007-08 budget, which will be considered by the Council on Student Services (COSS) at a budget vote on March 2nd, includes a $10 per term increase for full-time St. George students…

Tuition raises are always a point of contention for students. I was told that initially the funding for the Varsity Center was secured, and that no additional tuition increases were required to fund the Center. However I guess this is no longer the case. With this said, the Varsity Center is a much needed complex for U of T’s student athletes. To share the center with the community will mean that varsity teams will have to work their practices around community hours. If you’ve been to the AC on a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday night you can see that the Track and Field needs more space and better facilities. I don’t like running laps in the field house when the track team is practicing. Being a distance runner, I find it annoying when there’s slow moving traffic. For the sprinters, I would image it is dangerous, since someone could get spiked.

And Track and Field is only one of the sports which can benefit from the Center. Golf, field hockey, lacrosse, football and soccer are ones which come to mind right away.

so on March 2nd I’m going to vote for a $10 increase to support student athletes. I hope you will also support our student athletes.

University of Toronto Active U

Active U is an initiative at U of T that encourages students, staff and faculty to increase their participation in daily physical activity. It sounds like a great initiative. Haven’t heard of it before? Well, you couldn’t have picked a better time to find out about it!

Next week, from February 5th to 9th, Active U is holding the Active U Caravan: a five-day celebration of sport, dance and movement. Participants can sample a range of activities, including belly dancing, European handball, Polish folk dance, Finnish baseball and Brazilian martial arts. The best part? It’s all FREE! Check their website for a full list of courses, activities, and times. However, you have to sign up for the courses, and spots are limited. By the time I signed up (I signed up for Latin Dancing and Capoeira), the Belly Dancing class had only four spots left. So sign up quick. Sign up details after the flip. (more…)
