CINSSU (Cinema Studies Student Union) has blasted into their new season of their much loved and attended Free Friday Film Series. This week the featured film is Alejandro Amenabar’s , Open Your Eyes (Abre Los Ojos). If you haven’t heard of this daring Spanish scifi before, you probably still know of or have even seen its much more publicized big picture Hollywood remake, Vanilla Sky. If you can live without Vanilla Sky’s casting of Tom Cruise in the male lead but can’t imagine the movie without Penelope Cruz, don’t worry, you’re not alone. Cameron Crowe, Vanilla Sky’s director, couldn’t either and Penelope Cruz is actually in Open Your Eyes,  playing the same character. This Spanish original, which scored better on IMDB, is about “a handsome young playboy (who) has (had) his world turned upside down when a car accident leaves him horribly disfigured”. Into this mix enters an intoxicating girl who the playboy  falls completely in love with, and from there the movie moves into both mystery and fantasy territory, spinning into “a chilling tale of personas, masks, death and love.”
