I Believe Introductions Are In Order
August 28th, 2012 by Alison HoadleyHey blogUT readers!
I just wanted to introduce myself to all of you guys before I actually make my way up to U of T and start officially posting about my adventures and mishaps as a first year. My name is Alison and I was born in downtown Toronto, which could explain my affinity for U of T. However, I’ve been living in the US of A for the past 12 years (specifically McKinney, Texas). I guess you could call me a half-Ontarian and a half-Texan. Hmm, maybe I’m a Texarian? Or an Ontarixan? Since I’ve spent so much time in Texas, a ‘y’all’ might slip out of my mouth from time to time and I definitely call those fizzy beverages sodas, not pops. It’ll be a big transition moving from the suburbs to a big city, but I’m super excited to be back in Canada (as you can hopefully tell from my thumbs up picture)!
I’m entering the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education and will be living in residence at Morrison Hall. I spent my summer lifeguarding and teaching swimming lessons in the insane Texas heat (let me tell you, 37 degree heat is hot, hot, hot!). Here are some fun facts that’ll allow you to learn a bit more about me!
I cannot stand ketchup, but I love tomatoes and ketchup chips (odd right?!?), I’ve never been to a hockey game (hopefully that’ll change once I get to Toronto), and my Mom attended U of T when she was pregnant with me (so it was pretty much destiny that I also become a U of T student). So even though I’m pretty sure it doesn’t count since I was a fetus, I’ve been to U of T lectures and a final exam before!
So, the purpose of this post was to introduce myself to the world of blogUT and U of T! I fell in love with U of T when I visited in March and can’t wait to set foot on the campus and meet all you other U of T-ers. And I’m really looking forward to chronicling my freshman year through blogUT! Some other posts will be coming soon and hopefully those will be a little more informative about university life then this one. I hope you feel free to introduce yourself through blogUT, or if you ever see me around! I’m sure I’ll be looking overwhelmed – it is my first year, after all

Hey there!!
Oh that is just so cool, half Texan, Half Ontarioan (o.O)
I know a thing or two about Texas myself
And I’ve been in Toronto for 12 years myself!! I think it would be interesting if we two ever had a class together or even met up! Welcome to the U of T blog! I look forward to reading more of your posts

Hi Tamara! Thanks for your really nice comment and reading my blog post
Is it Ontarioan? Haha, whoops, I think I said Ontarian. As you can probably see by that misspelling, I’ve been out of Canada for a bit too long. Yay, someone else who’s familiar with Texas! Where in Texas have you gone? That would be awesome if we had a class together or met up, maybe it’ll happen sometime this year

Well, I haven’t actually been to Texas before haha! But one of my close friends actually lives in Texas so I hear a lot about it
McKinney sounds familiar though!
All the best with your first year! May I ask which courses you will be taking?
Maybe we have something together!

Hello Alison, I was wondering (presuming you are a dual citizen) did you pay domestic or international fees to study at U of T? I’m a dual citizen of Britain/Canada and am currently taking a gap year pondering over my university options.
Thank you ever so much,
Sienna

Oh, really? That’s cool that she’s a fellow Texan!
Thanks for wishing me the best for first-year! What year are you going into?
My courses are: Elementary Human Anatomy, Colonial Latin America, Outdoor Project 100 (F), Fundamentals of Human Movement (F), Foundation Sport and Exercise Psychology (F), Personal Health (F), Fitness and Human Movement, Intro to Physical and Cultural Studies (S), Fitness: Principles and Practice (S), Fitness and Human Movement (S) and Intro Psych (S) (And in Convocation Hall too-ahh!)
Any chance our courses overlap? Do you mind if I ask what classes you’re taking?

Hi Sienna!
You are right, I am a dual citizen. I was allowed to pay domestic fees! (which is much, much cheaper in comparison to International fees) When you fill out your application, it’ll ask you what type of student you are. I remember checking the box that said something along the lines of “Canadian currently living outside of Ontario” and that was all I had to do to get domestic fees!
Hope that helped! And thank you for reading my blog post

Ooooooh! You are taking Psych as well?? Only thing is, I am in the F section!
That’s too bad! I would have loved to have you in one of my classes haha!
Well, for the fall term I will be taking the Intro to Italian course, World Religions, Intro to Psychology (F) and one seminar class! And for my winter term I will continue with Italian, Religion and my seminar course, only I will have a French culture course in place of Psych
Are you planning on joining any clubs?
August 29th, 2012 at 10:09 am
Aww, man. It would have been cool to have a class with you too, especially since Psych is going to be HUGE! That’s really cool that you’re taking Italian! I tried to get in a language course myself, but they filled up so quickly.
I definitely plan on joining some clubs! There are just so many to choose from, but I’m excited for the Clubs Fair to learn more about them. How about you?

I look forward to joining some clubs! Hopefully I will find time for some clubs
What clubs are you hoping to join?
My goodness I ask a lot of questions hahaha
You just seem nice, that’s all!
Hopefully there should be some good music clubs to join, I just love music!!

Are you a first year too?!? Hmm, I’m all over the place as far as clubs go. I think that the Hart House Committees seem neat and they’re looking for people in the music branch! And there’s a scuba diving club, that’d be awesome! I definitely want to get involved via my Faculty too!
Haha, thanks! You seem pretty nice too! It’s just exciting to talk to some U of T people before classes and Frosh Week start, makes everything seem a little less intimidating

Hiya Alison!
I completely second you on that! It does seem less intimidating, talking to a fellow first year (so yes, that answers your question, I am also a first year!)
Scuba diving? Wow, that’s awesome! Hopefully there are more nice first-years like you around!
