So… we’ve got another election on our hands
March 30th, 2011 by Jess | Featured BloggerIn case you didn’t know, this will be the 4th election in 7 years. By now, I’m sure a lot of people are frustrated with having to vote, knowing that it’s probable that very little will change. This is one of the major reasons why voter turnout was at a historic low at the last election. I distinctly remembering the low morale during that time and the cynicism at our own elections, especially when we could compare all of our candidates and their attack ads with all of the positive campaigning that was going on in the States. It might have been the only time in my life I wished I was American.
In any case, you could ask, well, what does this have to do with student life? Well, Rick Mercer makes a fair point in this rant:
And when he mentions that point about the senior homes (at 1:10), here’s one of the pictures of Elections Campaign Day 3 on the CBC website:
So on May 2nd, vote!

“all of the positive campaigning that was going on in the States.”
wait, really? Sorry, is this the same US we’re talking about? The one that /invented/ the attack ad?
The last presedential campaign was more cordial than most (in part because of Obama), but it was certainly not smear-free. And the right-wing media has been lambasting the president basically since before he even took office.

I guess what I meant to say was that there was a lot more positive campaigning from Obama in that one election than all of the 3 we’ve seen north of the border in the last 7 years.

What I liked about Obama’s campaign was that he spent time targeting young people and encouraging them to vote – Canada needs more of that, and not just from Jack Layton.

This is all very ironic, considering that Canadians are supposed to be the polite ones. The times, they are a changin’

The Green Party has been both addressing young people and encouraging a more positive campaign – they released an ‘attack ad on attack ads’ before the campaign even started, and their first campaign proposal was for a national youth employment strategy.
